4 Golf Facilities in Canada 2017 Edition © Golf Canada and The PGA of Canada C A N A D I A N G O L F E R S are a passionate bunch. From bearing witness to Mike Weir's 2003 Masters victory, to the recent accomplishments of Mackenzie Hughes, Adam Hadwin, and Brooke Henderson, Canadians enjoy the game more than any other sport in the country. It's easy to see how enthralled Cana- dians are with golf by taking a look at the number of golf facilities available for golfers to hone their craft, have fun with friends, or introduce the next generation to a sport they can play for a lifetime. Home to 2,298 golf facilities (see 'facility defini- tion on page 2), Canada is now second in the world in total golf supply behind the United States (15,014) and just ahead of Japan (2,290). The majority of Canada's facilities are located in the southern portion of the country, a reflection of the country's population, 90 percent of which lives within 160 kilometres of the U.S. border. Ontario (805), Québec (359), Alberta (308) and British Columbia (304), the country's four biggest provinces, combined house 77 percent of the total golf supply. Ontario alone is home to 35 percent of Canada's total supply. Saskatchewan (206) and Manitoba (130) combined account for 15 percent with the remaining 8 percent divided amongst Nova Scotia (75), New Brunswick (54), PEI (25) and Newfoundland (22). The Northwest Territories and Yukon have four and six facilities, respectively, while- Nunavut currently does not have any golf facilities. Golf remains extremely accessible in Canada, with more than 90 percent of the country's golf supply open to the public. Canada's golf participation rate of 20 percent, representing nearly 5.7 million golf- ers, (refer to NAVICOM study acting on behalf of the Canadian golf industry) is due in large part to the broad availability of public golf. That number eclips- es all other sports in the country, including hockey. Ontario and Québec together account for 61 percent of the country's total population, and just under half of Canada's 2,068 public facilities are located in those two provinces, which are also home to 73 percent of Canada's 230 private clubs. Since Canada is home to spectacular vistas, natural terrain, and national parks, it's no surprise that resort golf remains a key driver for tourism in many prov- inces, although its overall supply segment is small. Ontario and Québec — popular tourist desti- nations, both — have 36 and 29 resort facilities, respectively. The home of the stunning Canadian Rockies (and the golf courses that sit near them), British Columbia and Alberta, have 23 and 24 resort facilities, respectively.
