CASE STUDY - MARIPOSA FIGURE SKATING CLUB FACILITIES: Allandale Recreation Centre has a 1,300 square foot fully equipped, padded floor fitness centre overlooking the Olympic rink, which is available to skaters during the time Mariposa has the ice booked with the City of Barrie. They also have an office exclusive to their staff in the Allandale Recreation Centre. As part of the school co-op program, the club has access to many of the amenities available at the secondary school. COACH AND ATHLETE RECRUITMENT: Approximately 95% of Mariposa's current coaching staff are former skaters at the club. As athletes move through different career stages, athletes are often identified as possible skilled coaches and are encouraged to begin a coaching pathway as their skating career begins to end. This model continues to foster the Mariposa culture with its coaches, athletes and parents. OTHER: Also available to Mariposa skaters are off ice strength and conditioning trainers, therapists and psychologists/mental trainers. Mariposa has a strong relationship with the sport science teams at The Canadian Sport Centre for any other needs the club can not provide. Mariposa has a close partnership with a local secondary school allowing skaters access to morning and daytime skating training. They participate in a co-op program with the high school adjacent to the Allandale Recreation Centre. Jeff Buttle, Jennifer Robinson and many other National Champions have benefitted from this co-op program. The high performance athletes at Mariposas spend, on average, 30 to 90 minutes per day with on ice coaches, most often for 5 days per week. 31
