10 | PGA OF CANADA - HIRING PRACTICES OF A PGA OF CANADA PROFESSIONAL UNLESS THEY HAVE HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE OF WORKING UNDER A GREAT LEADER, SENIOR LEVEL CANDIDATES ARE NOT GETTING THE MANAGEMENT TRAINING THEY NEED. 3 • While some may be natural leaders, there is an opportunity for training on developing culture, motivating talent, and team building. General sales skills can be lacking relating to the following: – Selling group events – Selling products to guests / members – Selling ideas into club boards and management Management and sales skills are the most lacking among senior level candidates. Schooling is not adequately preparing students for "the business of golf." AMONG JUNIOR LEVEL CANDIDATES, FINANCIAL AND INTERPERSONAL ARE THE BIGGEST SKILLS GAPS. 2 • For the most part, junior level PGA of Canada Professionals cannot step into an operation and effectively craft a budget, retail buying, and marketing plan. • They do not need to be finance experts, but they must understand basic P&L and accounting concepts. • While they may be adept users of social media, that proficiency has not translated into them understanding how to leverage social media for growing the business. • Students do not seem to be receiving training on how to manage people, give effective presentations and sell.
