10 | PGA OF CANADA - HIRING PRACTICES OF A PGA OF CANADA PROFESSIONAL
UNLESS THEY HAVE HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE OF WORKING UNDER A GREAT LEADER, SENIOR LEVEL
CANDIDATES ARE NOT GETTING THE MANAGEMENT TRAINING THEY NEED.
3
• While some may be natural leaders, there is an
opportunity for training on developing culture, motivating
talent, and team building. General sales skills can be
lacking relating to the following:
– Selling group events
– Selling products to guests / members
– Selling ideas into club boards and
management
Management and sales skills are the most lacking among senior level candidates.
Schooling is not
adequately preparing
students for "the
business of golf."
AMONG JUNIOR LEVEL CANDIDATES, FINANCIAL AND INTERPERSONAL ARE THE BIGGEST SKILLS GAPS.
2
• For the most part, junior level PGA of Canada
Professionals cannot step into an operation and
effectively craft a budget, retail buying, and
marketing plan.
• They do not need to be finance experts, but they must
understand basic P&L and accounting concepts.
• While they may be adept users of social media, that
proficiency has not translated into them understanding
how to leverage social media for growing the business.
• Students do not seem to be receiving training on how to
manage people, give effective presentations and sell.
