05 This research offers a fresh per- spec ve on how aspiring PGA of Canada professionals can grow and develop the required knowl- edge, skills, and mindset to be- come Head Professionals. Using data collected from both sur- vey and in-depth interviews with some of Canada's top Head Pro- fessionals, the research demon- strates career success in the golf industry is not something assured to those with low handicaps and/ or club connec ons. Rather, career success comes to those who have a deep-rooted passion for the game, an ability to build trus ng rela on- ships, overcome challenges en- countered along the way, and who learn from their experiences. • 78% of respondents obtained their first head professional role between the ages of 26-36. • While 52% gained their first head professional role in a rural or non-urban club / facility, 82% currently work in a private or semi-private urban club / facility. • At least five different roles, in different clubs or facili es, were normally held prior to becoming a Head Professional. • Managing people and finance was the area 70% of respondents wished they were more capable in prior to becoming a head professional. • While posi ve on-the-job experiences are important to the development of required skills, the greatest learning occurs when golf professionals encounter hardship, are making mistakes that have real business consequences, and are le on their own to work things out. • Learning from experience is not an individual sport. Aspiring golf professionals need to establish a long- term mentor rela onship with someone who will provide honest feedback on his/her performance and facilitate reflec on and deep learning. • The ability to be liked is cri cal to success in the golf industry. Acquiring a growth mindset is one way to improve a golf professional's rela onship-building skills as it requires him/her to be humble and accept the help from others. • Taking ownership of and structuring a developmental plan with clear goals and objec ves is paramount in accelera ng one's career. OTHER KEY HIGHLIGHTS The research also provides advice to current Head Pro- fessionals, or others in leadership posi ons within the industry, who are interested in helping aspiring golf pro- fessional achieve their career goals.
