CONCLUSION FIVE GOAL SETTING AND PLANNING If you don't know where you are going, you'll probably end up somewhere else. -- David Campbell, 1980 It is not surprising Head Professionals iden fied the establishment of career goals – both short and long-term – as important to their success. While it is one thing to aspire to become a head profes- sional, there is real power in having the ability to know thyself and set goals in light of what a future role requires. As discussed earlier in the report, be- ing humble leads to increasing levels of honest, construc ve feedback on one's strengths and weaknesses. This infor- ma on while necessary, is insufficient in terms of effec ve career planning. The key is knowing what specific strengths will be leveraged and what specific weak- nesses need to be addressed to achieve fu- ture career success. It is impossible to find the me necessary to maintain (or improve) all of one's strengths or correct all of one's weaknesses and meet current job demands. Focus and unrelen ng commitment to the achievement of their development and/or career goals was a consistent theme across all the Head Professionals interviewed. Al- though a golf club may have the best of inten ons to help an aspiring professional advance in his/her career, these Head Pro- fessionals did not take this chance. They knew what they wanted, took responsibili- ty of their personal development plan, and persisted un l they achieved their goal. As a young professional, you need to have fairly defined goals about where you want to go… a vision for yourself…this will greatly influence your day-to-day ac vi es and how you evaluate yourself in terms of how you're doing in your career. -- Lindsay Bernakevitch An aspiring professional needs to have goals…even short-term goals…have a sense of what makes them happy…without goals you can get distracted by li le things that may go wrong. -- Alan Palmer I knew what I wanted and I wanted to be a Head Professional…I then simply worked hard and kept my eyes on the prize! -- Dean Manz CAREER MAPPING: AN INVESTIGATIVE LOOK AT THE CAREER TRANSITIONS OF PGA OF CANADA HEAD PROFESSIONALS
