MORE RESOURCES FRED COLGAN GOLF ACADEMY (AGFC) www.agfc.qc.ca SUMMARY: The following case study is an example of an extensive golf coaching business that develops athletes from the New Competitor to the High Performer level of performance. While many coaching businesses will specialize in specific age athletes, the Fred Colgan Golf Academy (AGFC) has the support and infrastructure to coach athletes from all levels of performance. OVERVIEW: AGFC offers programs from the beginner to the elite golfer. The academy's main commitment is to offering strong continuity in their coaching and support services. At AGFC, the athlete can enter as young as six years old and develop within the same philosophy and structure for up to 17 years. The AGFC has supported many provincial and national team members, as well as professional players. COACHING STURCTURE: The AGFC believes strongly that the coaches are the business. The academy sells golf coaching and therefore the knowledge and competencies is the most important piece. The coaches work as a very close team with protocols for constant communication. In order to manage many athletes, the coaches and support staff of the entire AGFC team meets once per month to assess athlete progression, successes and challenges and revises any changes to the athlete's plans. These monthly meetings typically are for discussions regarding the top 20 identified athletes. For most athletes, the athlete will receive active coaching two to four times a week and will be supported by a specialist once a month. The AGFC take the coach's knowledge of physical education, biomechanics and motor skill acquisition seriously. It is important that in the coaching environment that each coach contributes something unique and specializes in a given field. USE OF VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are an important part of the business as they complete many of the administrative duties allowing the coaches to do what the love and do best - coach. They organize fundraising events, help with tournament set-up and assist with logistics such as driving athletes to events. ADMINISTRATION: At AGFC, two part-time staff are responsible for the administration of the business. One of these staff oversees the academy's daily activities and administration of the coaching sessions ,while the second staff is responsible for all the academy communications and event planning and execution.
