HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT This document has been designed to assist PGA of Canada Professionals in navigating their careers. Through years of coach research done by many international leading organizations such as the Coaching Association of Canada, it has been clearly recognized that athletes have different needs depending on the level (context) that they are training and/or competing in. Therefore, it is imperative that the coach be able to identify the context in which they will be coaching and clearly understand the knowledge, skills and resources required to coach effectively with a given athlete or team of athletes. This Career Coach Guide —Building a Career in Coaching Golf is organized in to three coaching contexts that align with golf's LTPD Guide. The three Competition Stream contexts include: 1. 2. 3. Coach of New Competitors Coach of Developing Competitors Coach of High Performers You will find that within each of these contexts there are references to entering this stage, and moving thru this stage. These refer to gradation of coaching experience and competencies within each context. In other words, not all coaches within a context are at the same level. Some are to be considered just entering the context while others may be preparing to leave the same context. Each coaching context includes a case study to identify some of the key factors involved in developing a successful coaching business. You will notice the case studies used in each context may be coaching businesses from sports other than golf. Since golf coaching as a viable career pathway is relatively new, there are opportunities for excellent learning from other sports, which are also individual sports and have a large instructional component. Generally, each of the case studies looks at coaches and athletes in a number of contexts, but specializes in the context in which the case study is a part of. "This guide is the first of its kind and will contribute to the development of not only my own coaching practices, but also to the vibrancy of golf coaching in Canada. Until now, the process of developing a sustainable coaching business, for many, was trial and error. This guide puts an end to that hit-or-miss approach by including real case studies from golf's leading educators. Here, we can compare the resources and structures of our own programs alongside these facilities. Drawing on other sports (Equestrian, figure skating) means we are learning from coaches that came before us. My own coaching practice has directly benefited from the appendices in this guide that outline the ratio of hours for coach to athlete training. As a result, I was provided with a clear pathway to create structures for learning that truly align with long-term development. It's exciting to be moving towards a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach!" Laird White Director of Instruction, The National Golf Club of Canada 7
