PGA OF CANADA - HIRING PRACTICES OF A PGA OF CANADA PROFESSIONAL | 17 EDUCATION: Hiring managers are unanimous in saying education matters, but not where one has received it. Obtaining a degree signifies a commitment to achieving something. However, they caveat it by mentioning: • Schools do not always teach what potential PGA of Canada Professionals must know. • Experience is, by far, more important. BUSINESS DEGREES WITH COURSES IN ACCOUNTING, FINANCE, AND MARKETING ARE MOST HELPFUL. Human resource education is also important but is not typically a part of any curriculum in a big way. EXPERIENCE: Past experience at prestigious facilities/venues get noticed. However, it is often more important who the candidate worked under while there. HAVING WORKED AT AN EXCLUSIVE CLUB GENERALLY INDICATES THE CANDIDATE HAS A STRONG WORK ETHIC AND CAN DEAL WITH DEMANDING CLIENTELE. SKILLS: Candidates can distinguish themselves with computer skills, which the hiring manager interviews suggested are lacking in the industry. WHILE CANDIDATES DO NOT NEED TO BE TECHIES, THE FOLLOWING SKILLS ARE HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER AND NOT PARTICULARLY ABUNDANT. • Social media – how to use it to create awareness of programs, drive sales, and build brand image. • An understanding of POS systems. • Spreadsheets and presentation programs (Excel, PowerPoint). • Web site development – not necessarily knowing how to code but being able to make updates and communicate with whoever else is responsible for it. • Email / server issues – being able to high-level diagnose and deal with companies responsible for the maintenance. SCHOOLS DO NOT ALWAYS TEACH WHAT POTENTIAL PGA OF CANADA PROFESSIONALS MUST KNOW... EXPERIENCE IS, BY FAR, MORE IMPORTANT!
