PGA OF CANADA - HIRING PRACTICES OF A PGA OF CANADA PROFESSIONAL | 13 FINDING THE RIGHT FIT: MANY HIRING MANAGERS MENTION IT IS GETTING HARDER TO FIND QUALIFIED PEOPLE IN THE INDUSTRY. Hiring managers suggested they were getting fewer applicants for positions and an overall trend of fewer people entering the golf business. Below are three major barriers that make employment in the golf industry difficult: • It is hard to hire for four months out of the year. • For junior-level-positions, pay can be low. • Courses in remote areas are a hard sell. The career path is not certain and not all members take the same route to find success. This research suggests the number of assistant professional positions exceeds the number of head professional positions available. If you look at the PGA of Canada's job board, you will find that some assistant professional jobs are higher paying and require more responsibility than head professional positions. The PGA of Canada has launched a pilot project "The Right Fit" that in part helps hiring managers create effective job postings to better address their needs. SKILL GAPS: Skills gaps exist in the industry, and the two common themes from these interviews were that interpersonal and financial skills are the biggest.
