WHAT IS YOUR LONG TERM COACH DEVELOPMENT PLAN?
With Glenn Cundari
Coaches need to do much more to apply these learnings by
participating in a balance of formal (i.e. - PGA /NCCP training),
non-formal (i.e. - conferences/seminars) and informal
(reading, networking) (Mallette, Trudel, Lyle, Rynee, 2009).
What else can you do to develop yourself without a
conference budget? I believe the cheapest (free) and
most effective way you can develop your coaching skills
is to video yourself coaching athletes. You can either set
up a camera on a tripod, or what my colleague at the
University of Laval does with her coaching student; wear
a GoPro so you can hear yourself and see you athletes
level of attention and engagement.
After you have captured yourself on video, upload it to
coaching software such as Dartfish and start tagging
yourself, run reports about common words, phrases or
interventions you would like to use more or less often.
Excellent professional development at little to no cost.
Developing as a coach, like any athlete, takes time,
thought, reflection and setting some goals that are
specific to you and your career. Good luck during the
off-season learning meeting new people, obtaining new
knowledge and learning new skills.
